The transformation of a highway tunnel into the park
The adjacent A9 highway is getting a completely new transformation; it will be widened and partly converted into the largest roof garden in the Netherlands. The widening of the Gaasperdammerweg (A9) will improve traffic flow and accessibility in the northern part of the Randstad. To improve the quality of life in the new city district, a 3km tunnel will be built for cleaner air and less noise in the disctrict. The roof of this tunnel will be transformed into a roof garden and will create a green connection between the Nelson Mandela Park and Gaasper Park. Once connected, the area will form the largest green city park in Amsterdam, with walking and cycling paths, places to relax and playing fields.
